Policy Highlight :
The framework seeks to make energy storage a core pillar of India’s power system, enabling large-scale renewable integration, reliable 24×7 clean electricity and a resilient, flexible and low-carbon grid.
Abstract:
The National Framework for Promoting Energy Storage Systems (ESS) provides a policy and regulatory roadmap for accelerating energy storage deployment in India. It recognises ESS as essential for integrating variable renewable energy, ensuring grid stability, and enabling reliable 24×7 renewable power. The framework supports applications across generation, transmission, distribution, ancillary services, and energy markets. It promotes both Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) through technology-neutral measures. The framework proposes financial incentives, improved market mechanisms, regulatory support, and easier grid connectivity to encourage investment. It also emphasises indigenous manufacturing, research and development, safety standards, and recycling. India’s storage requirement is projected to reach 73.93 GW/411.4 GWh by 2031–32 and 320 GW/2,380 GWh by 2047. Overall, the framework seeks to establish a financially viable, sustainable, and resilient energy-storage ecosystem supporting India’s clean-energy transition.
